How I Manage Eczema Flare-Ups

If you were diagnosed with eczema like me, then you’re all too familiar with the dreaded F-word: FLARE-UPS. I’d prefer to call them a “skin tax.”
Dealing with eczema flare-ups is like being hit with an unexpected tax audit. Just when you think you have everything under control, BAM! Out of nowhere, you’re slapped with the eczema equivalent of a massive tax bill. And just like dealing with taxes, managing a flare-up involves a lot of meticulous paperwork — only in this case, it’s creams, moisturizing routines, and endless lists of potential irritants. Both leave you exhausted, frustrated, and questioning why can’t life just cut you a break!
For 3 decades, I’ve been on a quest to identify the precise triggers of my flare-ups, but they persist as an enigma. What I have learned is that factors such as chronic stress, abrupt environmental shifts, and exposure to scented or abrasive fabrics play a substantial role in aggravating my skin.
Fortunately, I’ve learned to manage them over time, though it wasn’t an easy journey. I incorporate meditation, which helps calm me down. I also monitor weather forecasts to prepare for sudden changes, adjusting my skin care routine accordingly, to keep my skin hydrated. Avoiding scented products is crucial, and I opt for soft, breathable fabrics to minimize irritation. By taking these preventive measures, I can often keep my eczema under control to ward off a flare-up.
Now, this may spark some debate, but I’ve struck a balance in my skin care routine by alternating between thorough moisturizing and periods of moisturizer withdrawal — no products whatsoever — to provide my skin with some respite. It’s somewhat ironic considering the abundance of advice I received to moisturize up to three times a day.
On most days, I opt to let my skin breathe by temporarily dialing back on moisturizers. This approach has been pivotal in preventing my skin from becoming overly dependent on external hydration while encouraging its healing through the natural oils it produces. By oscillating between these methods, I’ve been able to sustain my skin’s resilience and overall health.
Additionally, I try to manage daily discomfort and prevent flare-ups by prioritizing loose, breathable clothing to reduce irritation, minimize skin friction, and allow my skin to heal. I also stay well hydrated, as it helps maintain my skin’s moisture levels from within.
And if it’s a serious situation beyond repair, I consult with my dermatologist to ensure treatment to prevent infections or sepsis. This balanced approach of self-care and medical consultation enables me to effectively cope with my eczema. This blend of self-care practices and medical expertise empowers me to adeptly manage my eczema.
Regarding lifestyle modifications, I’m guilty of not always steering clear of trigger foods or prioritizing a well-rounded diet abundant in anti-inflammatory nutrients. I’m still a work in progress. I do, however, regulate my surroundings by using air humidifiers to uphold ideal humidity levels and selecting hypoallergenic bedding to minimize contact with potential allergens. These holistic approaches have enhanced my capacity to navigate eczema flare-ups with efficacy.
Managing my eczema flare-ups over the past 3 decades has been a journey of relentless trial and error, demanding immense patience and resilience. Through diligent experimentation, I’ve discovered effective strategies to soothe my skin. The support of loved ones and online communities has been crucial in refining my approach. This journey has taught me the importance of persistence and self-care. While I still don’t fully understand the “skin tax,” I am empowered to live comfortably and confidently despite my eczema.
