WHAT IS ETHNIC RHINOPLASTY?
The term ethnic rhinoplasty refers to rhinoplasty procedures performed on non-Caucasians. The aim is to perform nasal reshaping to improve the appearance and/or functionality of the nose while at the same time preserving the unique features associated with your ethnic background. It is mostly used for patients of Asian, African, and Middle Eastern, and Hispanic descent.
Rhinoplasty is not a one-size-fits-all procedure, so it is very important to ensure that patients also achieve stunning results that look natural and fit their faces. This becomes even more important for patients of a particular ethnicity.
The most common ethnic nose types are as follows:
- African Rhinoplasty: They have the widest and most prominent noses indicated by enlarged nostrils, wide and rounded tips, and the absence of a protruded nasal bridge
- Asian Rhinoplasty: Asian noses resemble African noses as they both tend to have wider nostrils and low nasal bridges, which creates a flatter facial profile. They usually tend to go for augmentation of the nasal structures.
- Middle Eastern / Mediterranean: Middle Eastern noses are usually long and slightly droopy. They are characterized by bulbous nasal tips, prominent nose bridges, and large dorsal humps.
- Latino / Hispanic: People of Hispanic descent often have wider noses with drooping or bulbous tips. Most have dorsal humps or side bumps as well.
Ethnic rhinoplasty must be performed by plastic surgeons who fully understand the differences between facial structures of different ethnic origins. For example, an African nose usually has softer cartilage and thicker skin than a Caucasian nose. These characteristics may require a different approach compared with traditional rhinoplasty techniques. While many Caucasian patients want to reduce the cartilage in the nose, perhaps correct a hump, reduce the overall size and profile appearance, and reduce or change the tip, an ethnic rhinoplasty may involve adding some shape and volume to a nose that may be wider and/or straight. Common requests for ethnic rhinoplasty often include a narrowed nostril base, a higher bridge, and a narrowed tip. However, to assume that all people of specific ethnicity have similar noses would be a mistake aesthetically and surgically. It is equally wrong to assume that all patients of specific ethnicity desire a similar outcome for their noses. Additionally, patients may want to preserve their overall ethnic look.
Ethnic rhinoplasties’ recovery time may be slightly longer than the traditional rhinoplasties. Some ethnicities have thicker nasal tissue, which causes the area to swell for longer than Caucasian patients, effectively extending your rhinoplasty recovery time. For instance, the black skin may be thicker than the white skin and it means it is more likely to have a permanent scar on your face if you are African and your surgeon is not experienced.
In a nutshell, with a skilled and experienced surgeon, ethnic rhinoplasty can help enhance your natural beauty and create harmony and balance among your facial features. The doctor or clinic where you will have the procedure performed should be chosen after conducting a more thorough investigation than you could for a traditional rhinoplasty.
